One could not resist the memory of an old tune, "Let me call you
sweetheart," while watching the dancing and socializing of Cross
Creek Country Club Golf and RV Resort's Valentine's dinner and
dance Feb. 14.
Many sweethearts came for an evening of love and fun; many
dressed in the traditional Valentine's Day colors of red and
white. The heart-filled event was planned by social director
Jackie Wallace, with the help and support of her husband, Dave.
Jackie and Dave are from Maine and have two children and one
grandchild. Jackie and Dave are at Cross Creek for six months,
during which time she plans all the social events and lists
these coming attractions on a monthly calendar.
Jackie coordinated the decorations for occasion, with everything
in red and white. Red heart-shaped balloons that said "I Love
You!" filled the room. The tables were set with white
tablecloths and red place mats, red candles, heart-shaped
suckers and chocolate hearts scattered about the table. There
was also a beautiful arch decorated in red and white, with tiny
white lights. Park residents Simone Provencher and Leona
Theberge assisted Jackie with putting up the decorations.
Many of the sweethearts posed under the beautiful arch to have
their pictures taken. Four billboards in the hall also were
decorated with the red-and-white theme.
Dave Wallace and a crew of volunteers, all dressed in red and
white, prepared and served the food. The volunteers included:
Ivan and Lillianne Belliveau, June and Jim Nichol, Noreen and
Bob Collelo, Lucien and Pauline Larue, Peggy and Rich Carhart,
Judith and Dave Flagg, and Carol and Mike Grub.
The menu consisted of a great salad and dressing, fresh Italian
bread, butter, and delicious pasta with meat sauce and sausage.
Coffee also was available and everyone brought their soft
drinks, water or wine and glasses and silverware. Beer was
available, provided by Benny Iacobaccio at a reasonable price.
Cupcakes were served for dessert, with a choice of white or
chocolate. They were decorated with red-and-white icing and
heart-shaped candies, with traditional words on them such as "I
Love You!"
Later, Jackie Wallace asked the full house of sweethearts who
had been married the longest.
It turned out that Trigg and Jean Soyland celebrated 60 years of
marriage on Valentine's Day. Jackie Wallace presented them with
a gift and Jean received a bouquet of roses.
Then Jackie had a drawing for more attendance prizes. Many
people were married quite a few years, but none topped Jean and
Trigg. Then it was discovered that Anne and Bruce Baker have
been married only 18 months; a second time for each of them.
When dinner was over, Jay Smith, one of the park's favorite
musicians, began to play. A special treat was a song he sang
that he wrote about Valentine's Day.
People began to dance to Jay's music. They seemed so in love,
with heads together and looking longingly into each other's
eyes. It was an evening of fun and romance, and dancing was
enjoyed by everyone.
The evening finished with a lovely last dance. One could guess
as the evening ended that each couple went home filled with love
for each other and danced all the way home with their
sweethearts and valentine's.
